Queen MoustraviaToday's theme plucked from the 'August Pot Luck!' Hat is 'children's books I started drawing this character loosely to see where it would go. The wee face came first, then the big bouffant hairdo. At first I thought i'd turn it into a cat, and so i went forth drawing the furs and dress with wee gloves (a very posh cat). I sketched out the basics of a carriage...trying to remember what a carriage looked like...halfway through i thought, maybe it's a boat. Still the wrong shape, so i added wheels. My friend saw it and said, "oh a wee pram!". For some reason i thought..maybe not a cat but a mouse, and a little conversation later it was a posh mouse in a colander - a pedal powered wind assisted one at that! I present to you today, her highness, Queen Moustravia. Where is she travelling to...all shall be revealed - in time! Hope you enjoy her, and i'll see you tomorra!
Davy Glasgow, George Square Gymnast Today's theme plucked from the 'August Pot Luck!' hat is 'Strength', and features another of the gymnast/circus/dance performers whom i saw on his warm up in George Square, Glasgow. The obvious 'strength' here might appear to be the strength of a body. It also shows a strength of will and focus. It's not just physical strength that is keeping him balanced, but the power of his mental focus in executing his routine. If you're ever feeling at a low ebb, that maybe your goals seem so far away, come back here and have a look at this image - hopefully you'll recognise the inner strength that we all have within ourselves, and given time and focus we can really achieve everything we set out to do.
The skill displayed by the gymnast will have been a learning process, he may have had a number of defeats on the road to success. One thing's for sure - he had self- belief! Whatever you strive for - keep a strong focus - you can do it! Catch ye tomorra! Davy Little Tickles - RamonToday's theme out of the 'August Pot Luck!' hat is 'Anthropomorphism'! Usually in illustration or film 'anthropomorphism' is having animals, or inanimate objects take on human qualities - acting like humans. Just think of any Disney film you've seen - dancing teapots, candlesticks, Jiminy Cricket, Olaf the snowman from frozen - the list goes on. My own series of characters from 'Little Tickles' are a combination of human and animal. This again has been done by other illustrators for years - 'Thundercats' anyone? So, today I present a new member of the 'Little Tickles' gang - Ramon! I'll do a special post focusing on the whole Little Tickles world soon.
Till tomorrow, have a creative day! Davy The Selkie Chaser! There's a touch of Scottish myths and legends on the blog today, as the theme of 'folklore' was pulled from the "August Pot Luck!" hat. Behold the 'Selkie Chaser!' Again this character just came to me as i was sketching. I was trying out a new couple of brushes and it just forced itself onto the page. So far i've only come up with his head, so stay tuned for more of this character's development.
It appears to be squeezing itself through a magic portal in order to chase the 'Selkies' (seal people) who are it's prey. Who set up these underwater portals, and who rears these ferocious beasts anyway?...all shall be revealed in time! I once wrote a whole screenplay focusing on the Selkie's - perhaps this beast is urging me to go back and have another look at it! Have a creative day, and i'll see you tomorra! Davy Space BotanistToday's "August Pot Luck!" theme is on 'Environmental Awareness'. As i'm a sci-fi geek I thought it would be nice to see a spaceman terraforming 'New Earth' by planting flowers. He could also serve as a reminder to take care of our own current Earth too! I like the way he's turned out so i'll pop him up to one of my online stores and put a link when i'm done. Hope yer having a relaxed Sunday, and i'll see ye tomorra!
Davy Glasgow Life!Today's theme for the "August Pot Luck!" is 'Glasgow Life'. I saw these gymnasts doing their 'warm up', last weekend when I was in Glasgow taking photographs. They were so graceful in their movements. A total pleasure to watch. I'm now at the stage where i'm doing thumbnail sketches from the photos and footage, which i'll then develop into finished paintings. My aim is to convey the gracefulness and balletic movement in the finished paintings.
Hope you're having a creative day, and i'll see ye tomorra! Davy Granny's Mixing BowlToday's "August Pot Luck!" theme is 'food'. I've done a wee memory sketch of myself and my brother back in the 1970's at my Granny's farm waiting and watching her making the mixture for one of her tasty cakes. She was a phenomenal baker - and us kids would return home from our visits to the farm with very round tummies indeed! If we were extra good and behaved patiently, rather than running around 'raising a dust' then we would get to eat the remains of the cake mixture from the bowl! After drawing that scene, i'll need to go and try baking a cake myself!
See ye tomorra! Davy Space Hopper!Today's "August Pot Luck!" theme picked from the hat is 'space'! For some reason I have the image of a wee alien riding a 'Space Hopper" through the galaxy. As is common with this month, the challenge is to get the initial concept straight down on paper and then update with a finished piece as and when they are done. Hope yer having as fun a day as this wee alien looks to be having!
See ye tomorra! Davy Dance Me To The End Of Love!Today's "August Pot Luck!" theme pulled from the hat is 'dance'. Like all the pieces this month, my aim is to serve up the beginnings of the work - the initial sketches, fresh from my mind to the canvas. I'll update them with the finished artwork, as and when they are completed! I love the freedom that this month's challenge brings - just getting the initial stages of the work out there. If you're playing along, then please put a link to yours in the comments below!
Have a creative day and i'll see you tomorrow! Davy Spirit Of Dark And Lonely Water!Todays "August Pot Luck!" theme is 'something that scared you as a child!' I never had to think hard for this one. When I was growing up in the 1970's and 80's, if we weren't worrying about the threat of nuclear war, then we were getting the bejeezus scared out of us by Public Information films, designed to keep us children out of danger. The gentleman in the above picture is the "Spirit of Dark And Lonely Water". He's from a Public Information Film that used to be screened from 1973 onwards. The film showed children getting into trouble in and around British waterways. The voiceover was done by the actor Donald Pleasance and had a truly eerie tone to it. It's a wonder all us kids of the 1970's and 1980's aren't traumatised by these little films. Here's a link to "The Spirit Of Dark And Lonely Water" on Youtube. Hope you sleep well...and i'll see ye tomorra!
