The Green Lady Of Skipness Castle
After yesterday's "August Pot Luck!" Theme of 'Scary Dreams', I thought i might get something a bit fluffier, but oh no- today's theme is 'Scottish Ghosts'!
When we were kids holidaying at my Granny's farm, my Uncle 'Toorie' used to put the frighteners up us by telling us about the 'Green Lady' who haunted Skipness Castle.
Now, it was one thing hearing these ghost stories during the day when the sun was shining, but at night when the old farmhouse would start creaking, and the tap, tappity, tapping of leaves and branches against the windows would begin...well then it was a different matter.
My brother and I would be sleeping 'heid to toe' on a bed out on the 'landing', directly under the skylight and everytime an owl or bat would swoop past i'd be hiding my head under the pillow!
The 'landing' was open-plan and the toilet was downstairs, and to reach it you had to descend an old wooden spiral staircase - it would be a case of holding on...and holding on, till you were bursting and really had to go. When i'd summoned the courage to go i'd stealthily creep down each stair, trying not to look to the left hand side where the windows were - just in case a face would be staring back in at me.
Believe me, as soon as that toilet was flushed and the door unbolted you've never seen a pair of wee feet get up those stairs as quick!! Two minutes to get down the stairs, four seconds back up them and under the candlewick bedspread!
All because of the tales of the 'Green Lady'!
Here's a rough sketch of what I imagined her to look like on her nightly hauntings.
Hope she doesn't float up to my hoose for a wee holiday tonight!
Sleep well, and i'll see ye tomorra.
